When the regular season ends, the Yankees and the Red Sox will have played each other eighteen times. The first eight saw Boston sweep two three-game series and win another two in a two game series. The most famous and continuously important rivalry in baseball seemed to have fallen flat on its face, until this past Thursday that is.

The Yankees came into Thursday with a fourteen and five record after the All-Star Game, in which the American League continued its recent dominance over the National League and secured home-field advantage for the AL champions in this year’s World Series. This strong start to the second half of the season also included sweeps of the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers and division rivals the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox on the other hand, came into Thursday with a dismal record of eight and ten since the All-Star break.
In the first game, the sellout crowd watched as the Yankees put what looked like the last nail in the coffin for the very strong career of Starter turned reliever turned started John Smoltz. After a year away from baseball due to injury and a slow recovery, the 42 year old Smoltz has failed to impress for Boston this year, his first not as an Atlanta Brave.
